I am listening to the most beautiful Bump of Chicken song right now. I realised last night that the band initials spell BOC. AS IN "BAWK BAWK BAWK." I don't know whether that makes them more horrifying or more awesome. Garland started referring to them as BAWK last night, which made me very happy. You know that they thought up the name "Bump of Chicken" when they were like 12. It was probably some hilarious in-joke at the time, like me renaming my journal to gogohoninbou, except that their really lame in-joke made them like, millionaires and ours is just really lame. Oh, friends.
Garland and I had this discussion about how much we want more J-pop covers
. I want this to be a meme. So, friends list: I'll show you mine if you'll show me yours
First, here is my second-favorite J-pop cover: Suemitsu and the Suemiths covering CSNY's "Love The One You're With." I always hated this song until I heard this. I have posted about this song before but deal with it I LOVE IT SO.
Angela Aki - she has 3 covers that I know of, and I suspect she might have more if I in fact knew they were covers. :))
- "Never is a Promise" (Tori Amos).
- "Kiss From A Rose" (Seal - I SHIT YOU NOT THIS IS AN AWESOME COVER OF THIS SONG.)
- "Aoi Kage." This isn't an actual cover of "Whiter Shade of Pale" (Procul Harem or whoever did this) but it's a retranslation of the lyrics set to new music. It's worth listening to, anyway.
Ken - The Shadow of Your Smile. I don't know if this technically counts because it's instrumental, BUT WHO CARES IT'S AWESOME AND THERE ARE LIKE ROCKETSHIP NOISES, which is not something you normally hear with light jazz songs, my friends.
Fuji from Prince of Tennis, covering "Amazing Grace." No seriously, this is so creepy and awesome and wrong. And, uh. I don't apparently have it anymore. :( :( :( :( :( WHERE DID IT GO.
Uh, I don't actually know how to describe this (much less spell it) except that it's Queen, and it's the greatest thing I've ever heard. You must download this.
NewS - Can You Feel The Love Tonight? I know I can, Pi. I know I can.
KAT-TUN - When You Wish Upon A Star. May cause bleeding ears and a sudden compulsory urge to watch cartoons.
Jin Akanishi (KAT-TUN) - "Moon River." I actually think he sounds lovely here even though this file is only like half a minute long. :(( COME BACK, JIN. I LOVE YOU FOR YOUR MUSIC.
Bump of Chicken - "Let it Be." Garland gave me this last night, which started our whole musing on j-pop covers. I saw her Beatles cover and raised her:
Hyde - "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." This is, to quote Garl and Graves, "hard core." Also sort of, impressively hypnotic. And, uh, hilarious? Oh, Hyde.
Had Garland responded to my challenge ("Come after me!") I would have trumped her with this frankly sexy Love Psychedelico cover of "Help!" I love how lazy and American these chicks always sound in their English songs. They're awesome. I wish this cover were longer. I wish I had more J-pop Beatles covers.
Also in the realm of sexy girl bands, Tommy 6 covering "Can't Take My Eyes Off You." Weird, also weirdly hot.
[as an aside; having discovered that, because I at one point had 15 copies of "Lonely in Gorgeous" on my hard drive, I had managed to delete all of them except the one that was corrupt, I went on a search for a new copy of it. I then wound up watching the vid, which I have also seen 15 million times before but which I never quite get tired of because it is peppy and pink and fun; and now I am convinced that Tommy looks just like ladyjaida. Is this just me? They totally have the whole hot blonde/long-hair/glasses/chic-geek thing in common. I can see it. Someone tell me I'm not crazy.]
K - covering Rod Stewart's "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" You.... you just can't make something this beautiful up, people.
And finally, the teeny boy band Folder, covering the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back." This is maybe my favorite version of anything sung in English ever. WHO ARE THEY AND DID THEY DO MORE COVERS. I NEED THEM LIKE I NEED AIR.
Honorable Mention, aka SPANGANESE??
- Yum! Yum! Orange covering fucking "La Bamba." THIS COVER IS SO FABULOUS. It forced me to turn on the subwoofer so I could properly crank it up and enjoy. I love this song, haha, and I think I like this version even better than the original. *____* (And actually her pronunciation is really good so I guess this doesn't even count as Spangrish or whatever)
Runner-ups, aka, K-POP:
- DBSK & BoA performing "O, Holy Night" live.
- The Korean cast of Rent singing "Seasons of Love." I got this from Sam. I love it a bunch. :(</blockquote>
KK, now it's your turn, friends. Share your J-pop covers. I gave you "La Bamba." It's only fair. ;;)
